Show 9 goes on tomorrow and I promise to plan it out ahead of time. It'll be a lot of new stuff too, which should be refreshing. I'll throw in some more of that "in depth discussion" stuff that I've been advertising... not that I don't talk, but my melodious voice definitely deserves some more air time. Remember to tune into KSCR, click on your stream of choice, and listen in at 4PM west coast time every Wednesday.

Update!

No, I didn't go to SXSW (no money, so problems), but I am on spring break.

"Oh shit! Cabo?!"

Nopity nope noooo.

Got my wisdoms out at the moment and my mouth aint pretty. So, I'm back home and glued to this here couch. Point being, I have excuses for the lack of recent posts.

Last week before school was hell, academically. I have the track list from the show I did... I should post that soon, but understand that I've just been really busy.

After classes kicked my ass, I went to UVA for a few days, then got this oral surgery done right after that.

Pretty good reasons, eh? Anyway, all that explains my inactivity.

Missed you too!

I've been doing a lot of listening (plane rides, car trips, down time), while keeping an eye out for what's new and hot. Got a wish list going right now. We'll see what gets added to my discography (Thee Oh Sees was my last purchased disc). My iTunes is always growing though, and let me just say, The Dodos, Helio Sequence, Hercules and Love Affair, and a ton of crazy remixes are occupying my digital aural pleasures.

That's it for now. Time to pop some pain killers.

No tracklist...

"But why?"

Improved the show, baby.

"Oh... but I still want some new music!"

Tune in next week.

MGMT - KSCR Review

Album reviewed for the studio.

Oracular Spectacular - MGMT

This is some cocained-out, hipster shit. So, it’s pretty much awesome. Thrillingly catchy synths and fuzzy guitar lines dominate, but MGMT also flesh out a few pop-acoustic moments. There are tracks that swirl; there are tracks that bounce, and Oracular Spectacular is best when it pulls off both. The music is somewhere between 1977 and 2067, so feel free to float along, but make sure you bob your head and chant accordingly.

Oh, and to help the DJ in you, I’m highlighting my recs:

“Time to Pretend” is their first punch and their best one. See how these kids can capture the anthemic futurism of the 80s through the art of electro-glam rock. It’s the single that’s given them all their buzz, but watch out for that “fuck” 51 seconds in. Play it anyway - it’s solid gold.

“Weekend Wars” back pedals into some Steely Dan, Zeppelin, and Yes, only to then swerve ahead through the electric eccentricities of today’s indie-pop a la Of Montreal.

This leads us to “Electric Feel” - straight-up disco, and I mean Bee Gees and Abba, so dance already.

“Kids” is pretty bass heavy, and totally synth soaked. It feels like a swimming pool of electricity where all the children are singing that catchy hook over and over again. I guess that makes the title fairly fitting.

“The Handshake” is sung from within the same swimming pool, this time through bubbling murky waters and shafts of starlight. Haunting and… well, cool.

On every track, Dave Fridmann’s production sparkles with slick reverb and welcomed grandiosity. That only adds to the drugginess of the album, but instead of making you shy away, a trip with these guys should have you begging for your next fix. MGMT can sound like the Rolling Stones one second (“Pieces of What”) and like Evangelicals the next (“The Handshake” and “Future Reflections”), which basically means it’s a 40 minute substitute for all that crazy shit you’ve been smoking these last few days. But if you aren’t into the laced sounds of Oracular, it can completely estrange you, or worse, wash right over your head.

I’m forgetting something… oh yeah, the lyrics are good too…

RIYL:
Flaming Lips, Evangelicals, David Bowie, Of Montreal

We Also Like Silversun Pickups

Old song but a new vid. MTV gives us "Little Lovers So Polite" - a generic clip for such music and lyrics, but that doesn't make it boring. On the contrary, it does exactly what a music video should do and offers you a brief four minute escape. Enjoy the fuzzed out guitars and swirling hooks. Rock on, bro.

Scrambled and Mashed: Episode 5

No Ed on Friday (Lucky bastard-from-a-basket went to a MSTRKRFT concert, so I refused to play any related remixes... 'cept for one DFA79 remix).

The intrepid DJ Matt filled in for Ed, making it his first KSCR show. He fearlessly took control of the mic on my right, but as fate would have it, Matt's Mac messed up and went all dead on him. So, crossfades and cues were out of the question. That left us with very little to do, and we grabbed some Ground Zero milkshakes (Daniel Day-Lewis style) to go with the mashed potatoes and scrambled eggs.

The playlist was still awesome (no links):

Video Tapez (ft. Del the Funky Homosapien {Amplive Remix}) - Radiohead
Lose My Waters Of Naza(b)reath (Justice vs. Destiny's Child)
Pogo (Mano Remix) - Digitalism
Stayin' Alive (Teddybears Remix) - The Bee Gees
Da Funk (Casino Inc Amazing Disco Remix) - Daft Punk
Hunting for Witches (Villains Electro-Banger Remix) - Bloc Party
Nature Of The Experiment (Infix Remix) - Tokyo Police Club
That's My DJ - Girl Talk
Atlantis to Interzone (Crystal Castles Remix) - Klaxons
Y Control (The Faint Remix) - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Blood On Our Hands [Justice Remix] - DFA1979
I Wanna Be Your Dog (Steak Lunch Remix) - The Stooges
Tenderoni (Sinden Remix ft. Kid Sister) - Chromeo
XR2 (Hydroz Remix) - M.I.A.
I Believe You Should Looka Here (Rich Boy vs. Simian Mobile Disco)
The Good Life (HeavyFeet Remix) - Kanye West

"That was one goddamn helluva show" - Daniel Plainview

Speaking of milkshakes, if you haven't seen this already, you've been living under a rock on the moon of another planet in another galaxy without a tv:

Show 6 and more

Wow, this post is late, but for fairly good reasons.

Here's the deal, guys: It's midterm and housing season. That means any time spent at the computer is usually work related. Accordingly, I haven't been able to keep up the blogging, and unfortunately, I probably won't be able to post very much until after my spring break. So, here's the bare minimum - a tracklist of last week's show (no links).

Oh, this is a bad day. I deleted the playlist by accident. You see, when you right click on a highlighted item in iTunes, the "Delete" option is right under the "Copy" option. Guess which one I chose?

By the way, I got those APW tickets for Friday and Saturday... expensive...
